Claudette and I began working together in 2008 and she has been a significant collaborator and leader every step of the way. Now, 15 years and 14 events later, it feels right to hand the reins to the new Director, Film & TV, Claudette Godfrey. “I’m intensely proud of the work our small and very mighty team has accomplished. It’s been glorious to present so much great work at our unique event, yielding so many transformative experiences for creators and audience alike,” said Pierson.
“Leading SXSW Film (now SXSW Film & TV) starting in 2008 at the age of 50 was a wonderful, and quite unexpected, adventure. Her new role will include serving as a programmer for the 2023 event, where she will be celebrated for her exceptional contributions to SXSW and the entertainment sphere. Many of the films and careers Pierson has been privileged to be involved with are highlighted at SXSW Film at 25 and Alumni Stories. During her tenure as head of SXSW Film & TV, Pierson ensured the event was vital and wide-ranging, championing numerous careers in both the Conference and Festival, launching a dedicated section for Episodic programs years before other festivals and showcasing a renowned XR exhibition section, all while contributing to the strategy and direction of the broader event.

The most intriguing aspect of the film lies in a cast of animals acting out situations that seem impossible, without a single visible sign of trickery. Otis sets off to rescue his missing pal, which, of course, he succeeds in doing to ookie-kookie yelps of satisfaction from the audience. These begin when, during a game of hide-and-seek with pug-dog Otis, his devoted friend, Milo jumps into a wooden box floating on the river and is catapulted downstream, surviving the rapids before coming ashore many miles from his farmyard home. After that, it’s a cinch for cat fanatics who will ooh, aah, gurgle, giggle and shriek as Milo, an adorable ginger moggie with a spirit of adventure, gets into a number of amazing scrapes.

Never mind that the action is described à la bedtime story in a voice-over narrative that is relentless and banal, spoken in the less than alluring voice(es) of Dudley Moore: kids won’t notice these deficiencies, and it’s a wonderful movie for children. Successful wherever it’s was shown, this movie defied critical judgement.
